The interdisciplinary Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor Center at the University of Basel (KWUB) combines diagnostic, surgical and medical expertise for the treatment of patients with benign and malignant tumors of the musculoskeletal system (sarcoma center).

Especially in the treatment of malignant tumors of the musculoskeletal system (sarcomas), an interdisciplinary approach is usually required, so that in such operations, in addition to the oncologically experienced surgeon, the pathologist and often the oncologist, vascular and plastic surgeon, but also interventional radiologists or the radiooncologists are also needed. Such treatment therefore belongs at a university institution with the appropriate skills and infrastructure.

Our oncological experts are represented in important national and international expert committees. Due to many years of expertise and constant presence at scientific congresses and specialist events, KWUB has established itself as a supra-regional center. We also support other centers in difficult cases by developing individual therapy recommendations in the context of a second opinion.

With the Bone Tumor Reference Center in the Department of Pathology at the USB, which has existed since 1972 and was handed over from Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Remagen to Prof. Dr. Gernot Jundt in 1993, this competence center has been continuously expanded. Prof. Dr. Fritz Hefti established the oncological surgery of the musculoskeletal system for children and adults starting in 1982 and continuously developed it at the UKBB. In 2005, Prof. Dr. F. Hefti and Prof. Dr. G. Jundt founded the interdisciplinary Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor Center at the University of Basel (KWUB). This center was one of only 4 centers in Europe to date and the only one in Switzerland to be recognized by the International Working Group on Bone Tumors (AGKT) as an interdisciplinary treatment center for bone tumors (sarcomas). With the KWUB, a forum was created that combines the competencies of both pediatric and adult physicians. Under the joint leadership of Prof. Dr. Andreas Krieg and Prof. Dr. Christoph Kettelhack, this meeting takes place weekly at the UKBB, Spitalstrasse 33, Basel, with the possibility for referring physicians to participate in person or via video conference. The success is based not least on the close cooperation with all referring colleagues, with the oncology focus practices, the home nursing as well as the relatives of the affected patients and the self-help groups.
